Mycelium Packaging Challenges Styrofoam's Grip
Grown from mushroom root structures, mycelium packaging is emerging as a compostable alternative to foam.Manufacturers grow the material by feeding mycelium agricultural waste in molds shaped to fit specific products, producing a rigid, lightweight cushion that composts within weeks once discarded. Several large electronics and furniture brands have run pilot shipments using the material, citing sustainability commitments. Scaling production remains a challenge, since growth cycles take days rather than the instant output of foam molding.
